Rahmedetal bridge
The old Rahmedetal bridge on the A45 motorway near Lüdenscheid, completed in 1968, was closed in December 2021 due to extensive damage that could not be repaired. All traffic on this busy motorway between the Ruhr area and Frankfurt am Main had to be diverted through the urban area of Lüdenscheid for many years, resulting in years of massive traffic jams. The demolition of the closed bridge took place in spring 2023, and construction of the new 453-metre-long and up to 70-metre-high motorway bridge began in October 2023.
Our roller skates model III B-H with a load capacity of 30 tonnes each move the two formwork carriages, which are used to produce the concrete road slab using the pilgrim step method.AMETI Panmure bridge in Auckland, New Zealand
To increase the capacity of the bus connection between the districts of Panmure and Pakuranga in south-east Auckland, New Zealand, a new bridge was built over the Tamaki River next to the existing 156-year-old bridge. The new 210-metre-long steel bridge had a distinctive curved underside, which is why we developed a 600-tonne swing combination and pulled the bridge into place using a synchronised process involving a total of six of these swing combinations. The roller skates can automatically adapt to the curved flange of the bridge thanks to the swing arm, meaning that additional straight beams between the roller skates and the bridge were not necessary.
F60 in the Nochten open-cast mine
After a 13-week shutdown, the F60 overburden conveyor bridge at the Nochten opencast mine was put back into operation as planned. The reason for this measure was the replacement of the load-bearing components “large swing arm” and “roller table”, which had to be replaced due to age after more than 40 years of operation. A total of 550 tonnes of new steel was used in construction and around 500 tonnes was used for lifting structures.
The major project was carried out successfully and without incident under the management of TAKRAF, the company that had built the original bridge in 1974. Over 22 regional companies contributed around 50,000 working hours in shift operation. The refurbishment has extended the service life of the 13,000-tonne conveyor bridge by several decades.
CERN nuclear research centre in Geneva
Participation in, for example, the L3, LHC and CMS experiments at CERN
At the CERN nuclear research facility in Geneva, elementary particles are brought into collision in kilometre-long ring accelerators. For example, in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), hydrogen nuclei are collided at nearly the speed of light and, using detectors weighing several tonnes, researchers investigate conditions similar to those that existed at the time of the Big Bang.
Our roller skates have been used for decades to position detectors and maintain accelerator magnets. The project shown here used the V AS-H-50CrV4(-FR-E) roller skate with a load capacity of 85 tonnes each.
Our roller skates with load capacities of up to 500 tonnes are also used at other nuclear research facilities with ring accelerators, such as DESY in Hamburg and JINR in Dubna/Moscow.
Arena auf Schalke
In 2001, the Arena auf Schalke in Gelsenkirchen was opened after three years of construction. A special feature of this multifunctional arena is the movable lower tier of the south stand, which weighs approximately 750 tonnes and is 82 metres wide.
Depending on the event taking place in the arena, the grandstand, which can seat approximately 8,000 spectators, can be moved by 18 metres.
For this purpose, Börkey GmbH designed and delivered two twin roller skates, each with a load capacity of 500 tonnes, and four twin roller skates, each with a load capacity of 200 tonnes.
Blast furnace
At a Chinese steelworks, an outdated blast furnace was to be replaced with a new, more efficient furnace.
Since the new blast furnace had to be positioned in exactly the same place as the old one, and in order to keep production downtime to a minimum, the new 4,000-tonne blast furnace was erected next to the old one and moved to its previous location after the old one had been dismantled.
Ispad in Kazakhstan
Steel ladle transport trolley with rotating mechanism A steel ladle transport trolley with an additional rotating function for the steel ladle was built at a steelworks in Kazakhstan.
For this purpose, Börkey GmbH designed and supplied wheel skates that run on a specified circular track and enable the steel pan to rotate. Each wheel skate has a load capacity of 90 tonnes.
The wheel skates have contributed to significant cost savings compared to other technical solutions.
